Principal’s Message

Welcome to Figueroa Street Elementary School. My name is Shawn Peyatt and I would like to share with you all the wonderful things that make Figueroa a special place in our neighborhood. Our school has been in the community for almost a century. Many of our parents were Figueroa students and now their children are experiencing what it means to be a Figueroa Dolphin.

 

Our school’s vision is to cultivate a solid foundation in literacy and mathematics utilizing a STEAM focus. With that being said, we have put our resources where our values lie by having purchased technology so that all of our students have an iPad assigned to them so we can enhance our instructional program with the use of blended learning programs. We have created a science lab where our students can do hands-on science experiments. We have created space for students incorporate the Arts into our instructional program. Our students have access to engineering tools and our Math program supports cognitive guided instruction.

 

We have also embraced a very simple yet effective motto to support our scholars in creating a safe, fun, and motivating learning environment: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. The 3 B’s set the foundation for a multi-tiered system of support for creating a positive learning environment throughout the school. Our students are rewarded for positive behavior and attitude by acquiring Dolphin Tickets which can be used to purchase items at our monthly Dolphin Store!

 

We have an awesome instructional program where all our staff members work together to ensure your child has the best academic experience in a public-school setting. Our efforts have yielded us three years of steady academic growth on the Smarter Balanced State Assessments.

 

At Figueroa, we have ample opportunities for parents to volunteer and participate in workshops throughout the school year. We have yearly events such as our riveting Winter Program and our Family Read Aloud during Read Across America Week where parents are invited to participate!

 

If you are looking for a school that will set the foundation for a fun, rigorous, and challenging experience for your child, then look no further. The Fig, as we call our school with much affection, is the place for your child. Our uniforms quickly identify your child as a member of the Fig. We instill in your child that once they put on that uniform, they have a duty to keep. Represent your school and your family well. Do your best, be your best.

 

By Figueroa being a member of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools network, we have additional resources outside of LAUSD that enable us to enhance student learning by supporting parent learning, supporting teachers at the instructional level, and having access to community partners that support our endeavors to create the best learning community in the South Los Angeles/Watts area. That’s a lot of support!
